The North Alabama Railroad Museum announced the opening recently of its renovated mail-baggage car, Southern 3585, for inclusion in its display train. To commemorate this occasion NARM held an RPO Dedication Day event on 22 May, 1997 at its Chase Depot facility. As part of this observance, NARM, with the cooperation of the US Postal Service, is offering a souvenir letter cover. The USPS cancellation features a typical Railway Post Office cancellation adapted from a 1926 design and reads: "Mercury & Chase RPO-Sta May 22, 1997." The cover features an illustration of the Southern RPO-Baggage Car, 3585, along with commemorative text and NARM and NRHS logos. Stamps on the cachet will feature the 1994, 29 cent locomotive stamp. The cover is a No. 6, white envelope, with 25% rag bond. Printing is in black.
Since this was a special cancellation event, cancellation of this cover took place only on 22 May, 1997. We are accepting orders now, however, supplies are limited and orders will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
